Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR] -- [FLAGS]. A collection of fragments from various Civil War-period flags, comprising:

Remnants (2) of a regimental flag from the 40th New York Volunteers, the "Mozart Regiment." Approx. 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 and 2 x 2 in.  Accompanying documentation indicates the silk flags fragments were once part of the first regimental flag given to the 40th New York by Mayor Fernando Wood of New York City, 3 July 1861, and came from the estate of Sergeant Christopher Lutjens, Co. A.

Remnant of a regimental flag from the 97th Pennsylvania Regiment, approx. 3/4 x 2 in. Accompanying documentation indicates the remnant originated from one of two regimental flags used by the 97th.

[With:] Approx. 1 3/4 x 1 1/2 in. flag remnant purportedly removed from the Confederate flag flying at the Confederate Capitol of Richmond on 4 April 1865. Accompanied by a modern record of provenance, which states that the flag relic was collected by Methodist minister John O. Foster, who was attached to the 24th Army Corps and likely preached one of the first sermons after the fall of Richmond on 4 April 1865. He was given a pass to enter Richmond between 3-4 April, and during his time in the city, Foster received a section of the massive Confederate flag that flew over the Confederate State House. In Foster's diary entry discussed in the accompanying modern description (diary not included with the lot), he describes a visit to the Confederate Treasury, stating that he was allowed to "help himself" to the bonds and Confederate notes. He took as many as possible and glued sections of the Confederate flag he was given onto the bonds and notes. This remnant shows a Confederate "Corporation of Richmond" banknote on the reverse side that Foster had purportedly taken from the CSA Treasury (toning to each side, wear to edges, including some chipping, areas of minor loss).

[Also with]: Red, white, and blue flag remnants (2).  Approx. 3 x 3 and 3 x 2 1/2 in. Accompanying documentation indicates that the remnants were once a part of a large 34-star United States flag that flew during the Civil War. -- Additional flag remnants mounted to board alongside a reproduced CDV of a soldier, with no accompanying information on provenance. -- Large group of flag remnants, housed in box identified by consignor as "61st PA Flag Fragments / Shiloh Flag Fragments," but without specific provenance. -- Flag remnant, 22 x 23 1/2 in., featuring blue fabric canton upon which hand-appliqued stars are applied in a circular pattern on both sides, and identified only as "1st US Flag During the Civil War."
