[CIVIL WAR]. Commemorative crazy quilt featuring political campaign and Civil War reunion ribbons.
76 1/2 x 67 1/2 in. crazy quilt with decorative tassels, ca 1880s, likely made in New York.
Handstitched "1884" on one octagonal-shaped piece of fabric though ribbons date to before and after that date. More than 30 ribbons sewn into the border, commemorating a variety of events including GAR gatherings, political campaigns, and other communty events such as "Memorial Day" observations, and the deaths of notable citizens.
Notable ribbons include a memorial ribbon for Ulysses S. Grant (1885), "Harrison and Morton and Protection to America" political campaign ribbon (1888), "Neptune Hose of Auburn / Welcomes Eureka Hose of Thaca" firefighting ribbon (1884), and a large number of ribbons from New York GAR posts.
Condition of ribbons and quilt generally good.
