Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR] M.J. Maher. Is in Town Again with a New Stock Fancy Goods. Washington, IN, 1862.
Visible 11 3/8 x 18 3/8 in. printed broadside (significant loss with repair and amateur restoration to right side; creased and toned with some staining throghout); framed to 14 3/8 x 21 3/8 in. (not examined out of frame). Signed in type by M.J. Maher and dated 25 April 1862.
Large central graphic shows finely dressed men, women, and children gathered around an open box labelled "New Goods," while one person pulls items out of the box and a young man to the side holds a large flag reading "Go to Maher's for Fancy Goods." Text beneath graphic reads, in part, "I would call the attention of the ladies of Washington and Daviess County to my stock of l[adies'] Dress Goods Just opened and of the Latest Styles and Patterns. Among which will be found the following goods: Challies, Berages and Delaines, white Dres[ses] Hoop Skirts, Gloves and Hosiery. A full line of black Dress Goods. Ladies', Misses' & Ch[ildren] Lace Boots, Shoes & Gaiters Also a good stock of brown and bleached Muslins, and all the best styles of Prints."
