Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Prisoner of war carved mussel cross and Battle of Winchester metal fragment. Ex Julian Converse Collection. 

1 1/4 in. lg. folk art cross (upper edge features hole for hanging hardware, some light discoloration/soiling throughout). Identified as being made by a Confederate prisoner at Rock Island Prison in Illinois. With fragments of small storage box the relic was previously stored in, inscribed "Carved by Reb Prisoner Rock Island" in julian Converse's hand. 

[With:] 2 1/4 in. lg. metal fragment (dark patination, wear consistent with age and handling). Ironed ink tag reading "Winchester battle field" affixed to fragment. 

Provenance: V.M. Skinner (original envelopes addressed to Julian Converse); sold to Julian Converse (manuscript ledger sheet listing "Mussel Cross" and "Metal Fragment, both purchased in 1962 from Mrs. V.M. Skinner of Hmilton, OH).
