Lot Description
[BLACK PANTHER PARTY]. DOUGLAS, Emory (b. 1943), artist. Free Huey. San Francisco, CA: [Black Panther Party, 1970].
15 x 22 3/4 in. color offset lithograph poster (creasing throughout, fold lines, few short tears and pinholes in poster, wear to margins). With credit to Douglas in lower left margin, "Revolutionary art by Minister of Culture, Emory."
The poster features a young Black child with tears streaming down his face, wearing a "Free Huey" badge on his jacket. Note that he carries a shotgun, which is slung over his shoulder. The poster was one of many created for the "Free Huey" campaign, which called for the release of Black Panther Party co-founder Huey P. Newton (1942-1989), who was jailed for manslaughter after a shoot-out between Panthers and the police in 1967.
