Lot Description
[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. 11 documents and signatures associated with Revolutionary War-era figures.
DOUGHTY, John (1754-1826). Autograph letter signed ("Jn Doughty") as Fort Major for the West Point garrison, Continental Army. Addressed to Brigadier General Henry Jackson for General Henry Knox. N.p, 7 November 1783. 1p, 6 3/4 x 8 1/4 in. (folds, toning, scattered marks, adhesive at left edge line). Docketed on verso "Letter from Major Doughty for a return of the officers entitled to Brevet." Doughty states that General Knox wants the names of officers entitled to brevets "immediately if possible." Doughty distinguished himself with the 2nd Continental Artillery at Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and Yorktown.
HAMPTON, Richard (?-1804). Autograph letter signed ("Rchd. Hampton"). Addressed to his brother. Providence [Rhode Island], 13 May 1783. 2pp, 7 3/4 x 12 3/4 in. (adhesive repair, approx. 1 in. tear along enter fold, light dampstaining). Hampton asks his brother to help James Yancy [Yancey] in his new endeavors in Boston, and indicates that Yancy "has a letter from Sam Adams Esq. to Genl. Gadsdele who I am certain will do every thing in his power for him." A later period notation "Col. Richard Hampton of the Revolution" appears to the left of Hampton's signature. There were two notable Revolutionary War soldiers named Col. Richard Hampton, though the "Providence" location strongly indicates that this letter is from Col. Richard Hampton of the Pennsylvania Line.
[With:] Additional documents and signatures from figures including Benjamin WHITE, member of the Massachusetts Committee of Safety; Lt. Col. William MORRIS, ADC to General Nathaniel Greene; Gen. George MORGAN, Revolutionary War colonel; Thomas T. TUCKER, Revolutionary War surgeon and Secretary of the Treasury; Gershom GIBB, Revolutionary War soldier; and Lt. Col. Jonathon POLLARD, ADC to General William Heath.
[Also with:] Signatures from British Loyalists Lt. Col. John BAYARD and Col. Alexander Lindsay, 6th Earl of BALCARRES.
