Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. WOOL, John E. (1784-1869). ALS ("John E. Wool"). Washington, 15 February 1827.
2 pages, 7 7/8 x 9 5/8 in., on fully separated bifolium. Creased, with small separations to creases and edges, light soiling.
In this letter to Hugh Peebles, Esq., Wool writes of Peebles' plan to sell his house and lot, on which Wool has a mortgage, to a Mr. E. Wilson Esq. Wool informs Peebles that he previously told Mr. Wilson that he would not consent to any agreement of purchase of the property apart from an arrangement between Wool and Peebles themselves. Wool then explains that "the subject is a delicate one, and relates to a family nearly connected with Mrs Wool," and for that reason he has determined not to be a party to any agreement or arrangement by which he might cause that family distress.
[With:] 5 3/8 x 7 1/4 in. (image) engraved portrait of General John E. Wool on 7 5/8 x 10 7/8 in. sheet (toning, staining to edges). New York: Johnson, Fry & Co., 1858. Facsimile signature beneath engraving.
John E. Wool was a career US Army officer, serving in the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War. The oldest general on either side of the Civil War, the 77-year-old Wool commanded the Department of the East.
