Lot Description
[CUSTER, George Armstrong (1839-1876)]. Stereoview of Custer's Black Hills Expedition camp.
[St. Paul, MN]: [W.H. Illingworth], [1874].
5 3/4 x 3 1/16 in. stereoview on cardstock mount (some toning and soiling/spotting to print; mount with light spotting, creasing, and wear to edges and corners). Verso with ink inscription, "Encampment of the late Gen. Custer on the Plains in the Black Hills," above faint, nearly illegible inscription in purple reading, "Custer and his [indecipherable] men were killed by the Modock [sic] Indians in the Lava Beds." Also inscribed to verso, in pencil, is the photographer's name "Illingworth."
Though this example is uncredited, the image featured here is elsewhere credited to Illingworth during Custer's Black Hills expedition of 1874, and titled "A panoramic view of the camp at Hidden Wood Creek."
