Lot Description
[ARTISTS]. M'CORD, D. A., photog. CDV of Cassilly Adams, painter of Custer's Last Fight

Cincinnati, OH, ca 1865.2 1/8 x 3 9/16 in. CDV on cardstock mount (light soiling to print and mount; wear to edges and corners of mount). Identified in ink on image "Cassilly Adams 1865." M'Cord's imprint on verso.

The artist appears in this vignetted bust portrait, with curly hair and sporting a mustache.

Cassilly Adams (1843-1921) was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and he attended the Boston Academy of Art and the Cincinnati Art School before serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was notably wounded while aboard the USS Osage at the Battle of Vicksburg. He returned to his art after the war, working in St. Louis, and eventually creating the work for which he is best known, Custer's Last Fight (1884-85). This painting was eventually famously acquired by the Anheuser-Busch Company, then given to the 7th Cavalry, and ultimately destroyed in a fire at Fort Bliss, TX in 1946.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
