Lot Description
[POLITICS] -- [AFRICAN AMERICANA]. Republican Platform, Adopted by the Chicago Convention, May 1860.
Homesteads. The Republicans and Settlers Against Democracy and Monopoly. The Record. [N.p.]: Published by the Republican Congressional Committee. [ca 1860]. 8vo, 16pp (uncut, toning, occasional dampstaining, scattered losses and marks). With printing on pages 15 and 16 of the Republican Platform, Adopted by the Chicago Convention, May 17, 1860.
The Republican Party Platform of 1860 consisted of 17 declarations of principle, of which ten dealt directly with issues of slavery, "Free Soil," the Fugitive Slave Act, and/or the preservation of the Union. While many speculated in 1860 that William H. Seward would become the party's nominee, Abraham Lincoln emerged the victor at the Chicago Convention going on to win the 1860 Presidential Election.
