Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANA]. Books related to the Dakotas, including:

EASTMAN, Mary (1818-1887). Dahcotah; Or, Life and Legends of the Sioux Around Fort Snelling.  New York: John Wiley, 1849.

12mo. Color lithograph frontispiece and 3 additional color lithograph plates, with additional in-text illustrations. (Spotting.) Original illustrated green cloth gilt (slightly leaned, staining, spine discolored). Provenance: Miss Pearle (presentation inscription dated 22 March 1850); James Strohn Copley (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION memoirs of Mary Eastman's time at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. She accompanied her husband Captain Seth Eastman (whose illustrations are reproduced in lithograph here) when he was stationed there in 1841. While there, she learned the Sioux language and became immersed in their customs and religion which she writes about in this early ethnographic work. Field 479; Piling 1122; Sabin 21685.

Provenance: Andrew Jackson Faulk (presentation inscription to front flyleaf); Henrietta "Etta" Faulk (presentation inscription 

Second edition. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO DAKOTA TERRITORY GOVERNOR, ANDREW JACKSON FAULK: "To Gov. A.J. Faulk. With profound esteem and grateful recollections of your and yours" dated 20 November 1891. Governor Faulk later inscribes the book to his daughter Henrietta: "Again presented to Etta by her affectionate father, May 31, 1898. With 9 pages of tipped-in "Errata" at rear, possibly in the hands of Holley and Faulk. Howes H-592.

[With:] RIGGS, Stephen R. (1812-1883). Tah-Koo Wah-Kan; Or, The Gospel Among the Dakotas. Boston: Congregational Publishing Society, 1869. 12mo. Frontispiece. (Sabin calls for 5 plates, Pilling does not call for any, only frontispiece present here, minor toning.) Original dark red cloth gilt (recased, original cloth laid down, some staining). FIRST EDITION. Pilling 3285; Sabin 71343.
