Lot Description
Two Fragments of Printed Textiles, 18th-19th Century
THE FIRST (left)
Cotton fragment with an all over print in brown featuring men, women, and children in a tropical scene near a shipwreck. One scene shows a possibly deceased woman on the beach over which a man prays. The tropical plants include palms, cactus, and fruits. The swatch is cut on all sides and is sewn to a fabric backing. There are numerous repairs throughout.
Approximate measurements
21" W x 25" L
THE SECOND
A rectangular swatch of cotton printed with brown ink. The swatch is made of smaller swatches of fabric that have all been meticulously hand-sewn together to match the pattern. Oddly, the various swatches of fabric have different levels of fading that appears to have occurred before the pieces were sewn together. The hand-sewing and matching of patterns is done very well.
Approximate measurements
36" W x 23"L
