Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. 35-star American parade flag with "Double Wreath" star pattern. 1876.
9 x 12 in. wool/silk flag comprised of hand-sewn stripes made of period wool tape. With 35 embroidered stars configured in a double-wreath pattern, including a central star and a star in each corner. Wool cords and tassels are attached at the hoist end (small scattered holes, small areas of separation, some edge wear). Professionally mounted using stitch on board.
The red and white stripes are made of period, hand-loomed wool tape identical to that used on enlisted men’s uniforms to designate divisions within the Union Army during the Civil War. The attached wool cords and tassels may have been used originally to attach the flag to a staff.
This flag has been exhibited at several museums.
