Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A trio of sixth plate images of soldiers posed before painted backdrops.
Sixth plate tintype portrait of a heavily bearded and mustached soldier, wearing an oval belt plate and sitting before a painted backdrop made to look like a camp with tents. (Significant area of loss to subject's arm and hand, and another to bottom edge of image, overall a bit dark; unsealed.) Housed in a Union case with patriotic motif (nicking/chipping, non-functioning closure). -- Sixth plate ruby ambrotype portrait of a cherub-faced young soldier wearing a Model 1851 eagle-in-wreath belt plate and posing before a backdrop painted with trees and a stonework edifice. (Chemical discoloration around subject, with some surface imperfections/spots elsewhere; unsealed.) Housed in a Union case (soiling, nicking throughout). -- Sixth plate ambrotype portrait of a standing soldier wearing a possible Zouave jacket and headgear, standing before a landscape painted backdrop with green-tinted trees and grass. (Some surface mottling and minor spots of loss; unsealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case. -- Together, 3 sixth plate images of soldiers posed before painted backdrops.
