Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. GAR veteran's frock coat IDd to R.F. Woods with V Corps badge & Dept. of Iowa button.
Black eleven-button single-breasted frock coat. Matching coat-size "GAR" buttons at front and on the two-button non-functional cuffs, all unmarked. Buttons missing from rear vent. Sleeves 8 in. width at elbow. Interior collar tag "The Pettibone Bros. M'Fg. Co. / Cincinnati, O." Sleeve, body, and pocket linings in place. Two interior pockets, with label hand-sewn on interior right pocket identifying the coat as "Order No. 22633" for "R. F. Woods" with Woods's measurements below and a Pettibone inspector stamp "E.(?)C. Becker." Pinned at left breast is a handcrafted V Corps badge constructed of metal overlaid with red cotton fabric and with a general service button at center. Also at left breast is a circular pinback featuring the image of Major Augustus H. Hamilton (1827-1918), a veteran of the 36th Iowa Infantry, encircled by text "46th Encampment G.A.R. Dept. of Iowa / Major A.H. Hamilton."
Coat in overall very good condition with light soil and small spot of residue at top of collar.
