Lot Description
[AMERICANA - PIPES]. 2 ornately carved meerschaum pipes, each featuring animal motifs.
Meerschaum pipe bowl featuring intricately carved animal motifs, including a dog, canine - possibly a wolf (with loss to right ear), a ram, and an elk, surrounded by highly detailed carvings of leaves, incised lines, horns, and other decorative features. With metal collar. Height approx. 3 3/4 in. Housed in original silk-lined case (scuffing, some areas of loss to surface). Accompanied by 2 silver gelatin photographs showing both sides of the pipe bowl, each 6 3/4 x 4 3/4 in. on 10 1/8 x 8 1/8 in. cardstock mounts (light spotting, toning), both with Superior Studio, Cleveland, OH imprint on mount recto.
[With:] Meerschaum pipe bowl featuring woman and dog figures near a tree trunk, surrounded by foliage (discoloration, wear consistent with age and use). Hight approx. 3 3/4 in. Housed in original silk lined case stamped "Guaranteed Real Meerschaum" (scuffing, some areas of surface loss). -- Accompanied by 2 stems, which may not be original to the pipe bowls.
Together, 2 ornately carved pipe bowls with accompanying photographs illustrating one of the bowls.
