Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Drafting set possibly used by Civil War engineer. [With:] Compasses & other artifacts.
Modern box containing 16 drafting tools, including 2 protractors, what appear to be at least 2 protractor dividers, and other tools or sections of tools, accompanied by card with manuscript notation, likely written post-Civil War, which reads, "Part of a drawing set once in use by a Confederate Engineer." No further provenance or history is available to confirm this tentative identification (wear to tools, many appear to be partial, condition consistent with age and use).
[With:] Round wooden box containing compass, approx. 2 1/2 in. dia. No maker's mark, ca mid-to-late 19th century. -- Small square box containing compass, approx. 2 1/8 x 2 1/8 in. (crack in cover glass, soiling and wear to compass below, surface wear to box). Top of box inscribed, "J.W. Smith," bottom inscribed "Open end is Sant___" No mark, ca mid-to-late 19th century. -- "Adams Express Company" paper tag with manuscript identification to "John D. Casie (?), Fredericksburg (?)..." (heavy toning, creasing, soiling, and overall wear to tag). Accompanied by 3 buttons, a rusty screw, and piece of stone. -- Segment of a cardboard tube (surface wear throughout).
Together, more than 20 items, including drafting tools and compasses, possibly used during the Civil War-period. Condition varies from fair to good, and is consistent with age and use of the tools and devices.
