Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 2 daguerreotypes of men in cases bearing British emblems.
Half plate bust portrait of a distinguished and mature gentleman gazing off to the side. (Spotting throughout, wipe marks to upper right, and green specks to center; re-glazed and resealed 2022.) -- Sixth plate portrait of a younger bearded gentleman sitting at a table with his arm resting on a book. (Minor tarnishing and scratching around mat opening, very light spotting; original seals.) Case interior with pencil inscription reading, in part, "SW S[h]illin" and "134 Bracket St." -- Together, 2 daguerreotypes housed in Morocco leather-covered push-button cases embossed with the royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom featuring the motto "Diue et Mon Droit." This particular version of the emblem was adopted in 1837 as Queen Victoria ascended the throne. Only a ninth plate version of this case is found in Berg [4-106; Very Rare], and that case is attributed to Jeremiah Gurney.
