Lot Description
BROWNSON, Orestes A. (1803-1876). Autograph letter signed ("O. A. Brownson"). 8 April 1871.

Autograph letter signed ("O. A. Brownson") to William SETON (1835-1905). 8 April 1871.

2 pages, 5 x 8 in., on bifolium. Creased along old folds, some discoloration.

In part: "I am mortified that the notice of your book has not appeared in The Tablet. I have no longer any control over it."

Brownson then writes that he had 2 charming visits from Seton's sisters. He closes by saying that his delay in answering something is due to his "having been so engrossed in preparing an article for the Catholic World that I could think of nothing else."

[With:] Cabinet card vignetted profile bust portrait of Brownson (heavily toned, some soiling and spotting around edges, lower right corner slightly detaching; discoloration to mount in certain areas).

Orestes Brownson was an early Socialist, whose passion for philosophy and the search for "truth" led him through spiritual and religious inquiries. He eventually arrived at the conclusion that the Roman Catholic Church was the divinely established institution for the guidance of mankind, and was baptized a Catholic in 1844. He wrote vigorously championing the church and his views. His broad range of works were posthumously published in an impressive 20 volumes.
