Lot Description
[LITERATURE]. LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth. ALS with cover. [With:] ALS from Lord Panmore.

LONGFELLOW, Henry Wadsworth (1807-1882). Autograph letter signed ("Henry W. Longfellow"). Cambridge, 21 February 1876. 3 pages, 4 1/2 x 7 in., old folds. Longfellow references a photograph he enclosed of himself (not included with the letter offered here). He discusses the photo that the recipient of the letter originally sent to him, in which Longfellow says his the gentleman looks "at least ten years younger than you call yourself on the card; and I cannot help thinking, that 76 should be 67!" He continues, "I am very glad to hear that your poem has met with a cordial welcome from the public..." Accompanied by original cover addressed in Longfellow's hand to Nathaniel S___? of New York. Postmarked Cambridge, 21 Feb.

[With:] Fox Maule-Ramsay (1801-1874), 11th Earl of Dalhousie, known as Fox Maule before 1852, as The Lord Panmure between 1852 and 1860, British politician. Autograph letter signed "Panmure." October 1855. 1 page, 4 3/4 x 7 in., old folds. Recipient and content difficult to discern, although it appears that Lord Panmure writes that something would be "abandoned...fired...blown up." The letter was written while Lord Panmure served as Secretary of State for War under Queen Victoria.

Together, 2 letters.
