Lot Description
[EUROPE]. Letter signed ("Maximilian"), by Maximilian II of Austria (1527-1576).
Manuscript in old German, 3pp plus integral address leaf, approx. 8 1/2 x 12 1/4 in. (toning, light soil, pencil marks, approx. 1/2 in. of back page adhered to lightweight green cardstock).
Accompanied by translation into German and note in English indicating that letter appears to record a request from Maximilian to "our father's counselor and president of the war council" Emereich von Konigsberg. Maximilian asks von Konigsberg to make a tax payment he owes to the ruler of Pernstein.
Maximilian II succeeded his father Ferdinand I as Holy Roman Emperor in 1564 and retained the title until his death in 1576. He was a member of the Austrian House of Hapsburg, and also held the titles King of Bohemia, King of the Romans, and King of Hungary and Croatia.
