Lot Description
Contemporary Snaphance Rifle with Grotesque Motifs
John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

About .40 caliber. 32" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Bright metal finish. Walnut stock has carved rococo style molding around fittings, grip, and forearm. Snaphance rifle with notch and blade sights. Item features an adjustable brass peep sight mounted to upper tang but it does not line up correctly with front sight. Stock features lost wax cast brass and silver filigree style fittings overall, showing both animal and human grotesque figures. Triggerguard appears to be a cast brass representation of a nude nymph. There are also grotesque fittings carved from elk antler to forend, wrist, patchbox cover, and buttplate. Fittings are carved with Germanic folkloric figures and rubbed with ash or soot to darken details. Included with item is a brass tip red wood ramrod and leather sling.
