Contemporary Snaphaunce Rifle with Heidelberg Castle Motif
John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

About .50 caliber. 30" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Bright metal finish. Full length walnut stock has a straight grip carved with what appears to be a Diana or gorgon motif on left side, and buttstock with rococo scroll on right side. Forearm is carved with incised lines to both sides, as well as rococo scroll surrounding a Greek or Roman soldier fighting a bear with sword on left side, and rococo scroll surrounding a scene of a hunter shooting at a bear on right side. Snaphaunce action rifle with neoclassical style notch rear sight, brass fleur-de-lis blade front sight, and hand-made adjustable brass peep sight to tang. Item features a patchbox with carved elk horn lid and sling swivel to forearm. Stock fittings include cast brass filigree to left side of stock depicting a hunting scene. Triggerguard, sling stud, and ramrod throat are all cast brass fittings depicting grotesques and neoclassical motifs. Buttplate is chiseled brass with silver filigree fitting and a carved elk horn ball rest. Right side of buttstock has a chiseled cast brass Heidelberg Castle fitting to cheek rest, above an elk horn fitting carved Derrick in Heidelberg. Comb, bottom edge of cheek rest, and patchbox lid have elk horn fittings that are carved with Germanic knotwork and grotesque devil motifs. Buttplate is signed J.D./Fecit. Included with item is a brass tip red wood ramrod.
