Contemporary Flintlock Jaeger Rifle with Actaeon and Diana Motifs
John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

About .45 caliber. 31" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Browned metal finish. Walnut stock has ornate rococo scrollwork carved overall to straight grip and forearm. Flintlock jaeger rifle with two leaf folding notch rear sight and fleur-de-lis brass blade front sight. Item features a patchbox, sling swivels, and double set triggers. Stock has cast sterling silver filigree fittings intertwined with grotesques and animals, possibly depicting the allegory of Actaeon and Diana the Huntress. Fitting to heel of buttplate is carved SAY YOU SAW DIANA NAKED. Forend cap, ferrules, and triggerguard are cast sterling silver filigree with grotesque masks. Lock is old Germanic style.
