Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. Album of 18 photographs of Blackfeet Chiefs, incl. Two Guns White Calf.
11 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. album containing 18 photographs ranging in size from 4 x 5 1/4 in. to 8 x 10 in. Photographs mounted recto on 11 1/4 x 9 in. album pages, most with manuscript caption on album page or typed caption affixed below image or to lower margin of image (toning, occasional wear to photographs, few with chips and light creasing to edges/corners; album very good).
The album appears to have been assembled by William Tomkins of San Diego, CA, ca 1929, and features photographs of prominent Blackfeet Chiefs, their wives, and children, including Two Guns White Calf, Heavy Breast, Buckskin Horse, Chief Iron Pipe, Paul Iron Pipe, Chief Shortman, Chief Little Dog, Chief Wades in the Water, Chief Bull Calf, Mrs. Bull Calf, Mrs. White Grass, and Baby White Grass, Julia Wades-in-the-Water, Mrs. Middle-Rider, Mrs. Two Guns White Calf, and Mrs. Go-Get-a-Man. Several photographs were taken in Montana, including Browning, Cut Bank, and Heart Butte, although at least two were taken in England based on manuscript notations.
One photograph showing Chiefs Heavy Breast, Buckskin Horse, and Two Guns White Calf is accompanied by a handwritten note from William Tomkins in which he describes the image: "This photo was taken at the World (?) Jamboree in England, Aug. 1929, just before leading the parade of 50,000 Boy Scouts in the Prince of Wales Review." An image of William Tompkins of San Diego, CA, shown in Native dress in England in 1929 is also enclosed.
Three additional photographs of note show a Blackfeet Indian gathering, including a view identified as "Blackfeet Indian Council proposing the adoption of Mr. Charles W. Galloway, Vice President B.&.O.R.R."
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
