Lot Description
Belgian Colt Brevete 1851 Navy Revolver by Gilon in Modern Display Case
9.5mm (.375 caliber). 7.4375" octagonal barrel. SN: 17747. Blued finish, brass backstrap and triggerguard, one-piece walnut grip. Single action percussion revolver with smooth six-chambered cylinder, brass post front sight and hammer nose notch rear sight which is chipped and missing. Top of barrel flat marked in two lines: COLT/PATENT. Cylinder with traces of a roll engraved naval scene and Liege proof mark, face of cylinder with weak N/GILON maker's mark. Matching serial numbers on the bottom of the barrel web, on the frame and on the triggerguard. No numbers are present on the exterior of the butt, loading lever, cylinder or wedge. Gilon was one of the more prolific of the mid-19th century Belgian makers who produced licensed "copies" of Colt revolvers based Colt's patents. A modern display case is included with the revolver.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition Report
Good. Bore fair, dark, heavily pitted but with visible rifling. Metal with some old blue finish which is dulling and fading and showing scattered pinpricking and minor roughness. Markings mostly visible with a weak cylinder scene. Mechanically functional, with timing and indexing issues that require attention. Nose of hammer chipped and missing. Grip with moderate wear, chipped lower leading and trailing edges and moderately sanded. Display case very good.
