Lot Description
U.S. Model 1833 Dragoon Saber by Ames Dated 1837
Mexican American War
34" single-edged spearpoint quill back blade with rounded spine, 1.125" wide at ricasso. 39.75" in overall length. 5" hilt with two-branch brass guard and knucklebow, grooved leather covered wood grip with seven wraps of twisted wire. Forward swept disc shaped quillon inspected with a TW on the reverse, and HKC/ORD on the lower rear face. Blade is dry needle etched in four lines on the obverse N.P. Ames/Cutler/Springfield/1837. The reverse is similarly etched United States over a splay of laurels. The sword is accompanied by its browned steel scabbard with an HKC/ORD inspection on the drag. A lovely example of a pre-Mexican War Dragoon Saber that could have seen Seminole War use as well.
From the Collection of George Oldenbourg
Condition Report
Very good to fine. Blade with much of the polish, with the metal having dulled in some areas and showing some lightly scattered oxidized discoloration as well. Etched markings remain clear and crisp. Hilt with a medium golden patina and a small dinged bend in the counterguard. Grip with much of the leather intact, showing some flaking, surface wear and loss. Wire intact, as is buff throat washer. Scabbard with some strong traces of brown remaining, some wear and some lightly scattered surface oxidation.
