Single shot percussion muzzleloading military rifle with barrel secured by two spring retained flat barrel bands, the upper band being double strapped. Lock marked E. WHITNEY/U.S. in two horizontal lines forward of the hammer and marked in two lines N. HAVEN/1850 vertically at the tail. Left quadrant of breech inspected US/JH/VP, left flat stamped STEEL and breech plug tang with matching 1850 date. Stock with Harpers Ferry JLB inspection in the patchbox cut out, along with the three router pilot holes associated with Harpers Ferry stocks. No "US" on buttplate tang, typical of Harpers Ferry buttplates. No cartouche or inspection marks visible on the counterpane. Rifle retains the original fixed notch rear sight and brass blade front sight, both sling swivels and a full-length original brass tipped trumpet head iron ramrod with threads on the end.
