Whitney U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle
American Civil War

.54 caliber. 33" barrel. SN: NSN. Browned finish, color casehardened lock and hammer, brass furniture. Single shot percussion muzzleloading military rifle with barrel secured by two spring retained flat barrel bands, the upper band being double strapped. Lock marked E. WHITNEY/U.S. in two horizontal lines forward of the hammer and marked in two lines N. HAVEN/1850 vertically at the tail. Left quadrant of breech inspected US/JH/VP, left flat stamped STEEL and breech plug tang with matching 1850 date. Stock with Harpers Ferry JLB inspection in the patchbox cut out, along with the three router pilot holes associated with Harpers Ferry stocks. No "US" on buttplate tang, typical of Harpers Ferry buttplates. No cartouche or inspection marks visible on the counterpane. Rifle retains the original fixed notch rear sight and brass blade front sight, both sling swivels and a full-length original brass tipped trumpet head iron ramrod with threads on the end.

Condition Report

Good. Bore with moderate oxidation and some pitting but with good seven groove rifling. Barrel with traces of finish mixed with a moderately oxidized brownish patina with scattered darker oxidation, discoloration and some areas of minor surface roughness. Lock with a dull mottled grayish-blue patina and hints of case coloring. Markings in metal remain clear and visible. Mechanically functional lock. Wood with moderate wear and sanding, showing rounding to the sharp edges. Wood showing scattered bumps, dings and mars.
