** Smith & Wesson Model 1917 Revolver
World War I

.45 ACP. 5.5" barrel length. SN: 75940. Blued finish with casehardened hammer and trigger, and mounting checkered Smith & Wesson medallion grips with lanyard loop to butt. Double action loading gate revolver based upon the Smith & Wesson Triple Lock action and mounting a five screw frame with pinned barrel. Sights consist of a half moon front blade and topstrap notch. Manufacturer marks include S.&W. D.A. 45 to left barrel, and two line address to the top of the barrel reading SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A./PATENTED DEC.17.1901.FEB.6.1908.SEP.14.1909. Assembly number to the inner frame and crane reads 40876. The serial numbers match on the butt, barrel, and cylinder. Grips are unmarked. Government service marks include "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" below the barrel, {Ordnance Bomb} to the upper left frame, and assorted {Eagle Head} inspection marks on the frame, cylinder, and barrel. The butt is struck U.S./ARMY/MODEL/1917. The stocks are unmarked and possibly replaced.

Condition Report

Very Good. Bore is Frosty with a brown patina throughout and strong rifling. The bluing has worn down on the gripstraps with a brown patina forming in the losses. Item shows light edgewear overall with finish worn off on the edges of the muzzle. Further scattered scratches, mars, and losses overall. A patch of brown patina is forming on the rear edge of the left recoil shield. Casehardened finish on the hammer and trigger remains strong on the flanks with a gray patina on the handling surfaces. The cylinder shows a continuous drag line. Grips retain fine details to the medallions. Sign of possible splice at the forward edge of the left panel. Action exhibits good timing.
