Lot Description
Composite Baden Flintlock Musket with an 1827 Dated US Model 1822 (1816 Type II) Lock
.71 caliber. 42.75" round barrel. SN: NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, European hardwood stock. Single shot muzzleloading smoothbore European military musket with reconverted US Model 1816/22 lock. Reconverted flint lock is marked SPRING/FIELD/1827 in three vertical lines behind the cock and with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/US forward of the cock. The lock has an incorrect cock and is mounted in a reconverted to flint European musket that was likely of French or Germanic origin and is the type known to collectors as a Baden Conversion Musket (formerly incorrectly attributed to Wurttemburg). The alterations were primarily done at the St. Blasien Arsenal in the Black Forrest. The stock has weak OHIO ownership marks on the counterpane and wrist. The musket had remnants of a block rear sight near the breech, a ramped front sight and has a socket bayonet lug under the barrel. It retains the upper sling swivel, but the lower swivel is missing. A full-length iron button head ramrod is included. A Civil War import musket that came here in percussion and was eventually sent to Ohio circa 1863, but was altered to flint at some point in the 20th century in an ill advised attempt to restore a gun that had more historical value as a percussion conversion.
