Lot 306
Lot of 27 stereoviews featuring early scenes of San Francisco, each with subject and/or location inscribed in ink at lower right, some marked "Welbourne Polo Mo" along right edge, two with Welbourne studio imprint on verso (one with date 1898). Lot includes views of human subjects such as Chinese men and fishermen, along with many man-made structures and geographical features such as Kings River, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Park, Spreckels Mansion, the Hall of Justice (appearing to be still under construction), Alcatraz Island, and others.
The exact date of these collective views is unknown, however, the "in-progress" Hall of Justice view allows some conjecture. The Hall was completed in 1901, destroyed in the fires following the 1906 earthquake, and not rebuilt on the same site. Therefore, these views likely date from around the turn of the twentieth century.
