Lot Description
Spanish Main Gauche Attributed to Either Miguel or Domingo Sanchez (a.k.a. El Tigerero)
15.25" blade length. 23.5" overall. 13.5" crossguard. Single edge spear point triangular blade with a 6.5" false edge and wide flat ricasso with neoclassical style chiseling. Wide triangular guard with rolled and edges that are hatched. Button head quillons are simply chiseled and fluted, secured to guard with two flathead screws. Grip is wrapped with leather and has brass fittings. Pommel is egg shaped with a finial. Blade is marked to one side with an armourer's mark that appears to be a pair of scissors or crossed scepters. The mark is very similar to two scissors marks shown in the Royal Armory Catalog of 1849's list of Toledo Swordsmen, marks 21 and 78. The marks are those of Domingo Sanchez, commonly known as "El Tigerero", and his son Miguel Sanchez. Possibly mid-17th century.
