Lot Description
[Children's & Illustrated] Carlson, George L. Rip Van Winkle Cut-Out Pageant
No place, possibly ca. 1930s. Group of 40 hand painted character and scene designs for a seemingly unpublished "cut out" book by artist George L. Carlson, based on the famous story by Washington Irving. Sizes vary. Includes a full size hand-painted maquette of the book, 13 x 10 1/2 in., signed at bottom left by Carlson and with his address stamp mounted to verso of front cover.
George L. Carlson (1887-1962) was an American artist and illustrator, active for over 50 years, now remembered for his dust-jacket design for Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind.
The Library of Congress holds a copyright, ca. 1913, for Mary Patterson's children's book Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow – Washington Irving’s Stories Retold, with images created by Carlson.
A unique collection.
