Scottish-born photographer John Collier came to Central City, Colorado in 1871, and established one of the earliest photography studios there. In 1878, he sold the business and moved to Denver to open another studio. This work, published to promote tourism in Colorado, provides a fantastic glimpse of the region, and includes a bird's-eye-view of Central City, two railroad views, a view of Clear Creek Canyon, Boulder Canyon, Garden of the Gods, Monument Park, Rainbow Falls at Manitou, Cheyenne Canyon, Monument Park, and more. Unlike many Colorado pieces, the scenes are all over the state and not concentrated around Colorado Springs.
The number of photographs vary from copy to copy; the present example with more photographs than usually encountered.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
