A Greek Terracotta Venus
Circa 2nd-1st Century B.C.
Height 16 inches (40 cm).
Property from the Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs, California, Sold to Support the Care of Collections and the William Holden Fund for Acquisitions
Provenance:
Gift of the William Holden Estate, 1981; William Holden (b. 1918) was an American actor best known for his roles in Sabrina and The Wild Bunch. Holden had various collecting interests, with an emphasis in ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and African objects.
Condition Report
Intact. The Venus has been repaired at the legs along the hips and groin; other areas of possible infill, repair, or restoration. Overall surface wear with pitting, abrasions, incrustations, chipping, and surface loss; some of the surface is flaking and chipping. The proper right arm is broken near the wrist with the hand now lost; the proper left arm is broken just under the shoulder with the arm now lost. The Venus has been drilled between the shoulder blades in the back to accommodate a metal dowel to secure the figure to a modern granite base; the foot was once secured but has flaked and broken away from the base. Old collection label affixed to the back of base reading DM-11-82-Q-CL. Height with base 17 1/2 inches.
