Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Quarter plate tintype of group of soldiers celebrating Union victory at the First Battle of Memphis. N.p.: n.p., June 1862.
Quarter plate hand-tinted tintype (some light scratches to surface). With brass frame. Surface of plate is etched "News from Memphis, June 8th 62, A Griss (?), artist."
A group shot of 9 men in celebration doffing their hats, toasting, and crying out in joy. Their cheeks are delicately hand-tinted pink and buttons gilded. The man to the far left holds a newspaper which has been etched, "Memphis is ours, Hurra my boys." The image was taken following the decisive battle between Federal and Confederate gunboats, which occurred on 6 June 1862 with Union troops occupying the city later that same day following a morning-long naval slugfest.
