Lot Description
[HARRISON, William Henry (1773-1841).] KIRK, Edward Norris (1802-1874). Eulogy on President Harrison. [New York]: J.W. Harrison, [1841].
Approx. 24 x 18 7/8 in. letterpress broadside (some offsetting, some separations with tape repairs to verso).
After President Harrison's untimely death on 4 April 1841, the shocked nation entered into a 30-day period of mourning with a funeral on 7 April in Washington DC and a Day of National Fast on 14 May. Orators and preachers around the country composed eulogies and sermons in his memory, many delivered on the day of fast.
Reverend Kirk was a pastor, missionary, evangelist, and major figure in the Presbyterian and revival movements. He founded the Fourth Presbyterian Church in Albany following a schism in the Second Presbyterian Church and was the first pastor of Mount Vernon Congregational Church in Boston 1841-1871 where he converted evangelist Dwight L. Moody. His sermon, delivered before the Academy of Sacred Music in the Broadway Tabernacle in New York was published by John S. Taylor & Co. RARE: OCLC locates one copy held at the New-York Historical Society Library.
