Lot Description
[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. Declaration of Independence. N.d., [ca 19th century].
Approx. 19 x 24 in. dissected and linen backed; in plain leather folder 5.5 x 7.5 in. Marked at bottom of center column of signatures: “Engraved by David Landis.” (A few folds beginning to separate; scattered browning)
David Bachman Landis (1862-1940). Apprenticed at Inquirer Printing and Publishing Company in Lancaster, PA in 1878. In 1883 opened his own printing office in Landisville where he published the Village Vigil. Moved to Lancaster in 1888, started Pluck Art Printery (and the magazine, Pluck), changed to Landis Art Print in 1914. He was an apprentice just after the centennial when many of the important documents pertaining to the early nation were reprinted. He may have seen the popularity of these, and since they are not copyrighted, make a good “starter” printing (and advertising piece). There are relatively few documents in this bisected style, so Landis could show his capabilities.
