Lot Description
Civil War regulation Model 1858 infantry frock coat identified to Private James C. Woods, Company E, 5th Ohio Infantry.

Early war example of an infantry private’s Model 1858 regulation nine-button blue wool frock coat (few small moth holes, overall condition is superb). The coat includes sky blue double taping on the collar and cuffs, which is indicative of earlier manufacture and much less common than the cording found on most EM coats. With nine coat size general service eagle buttons marked “Extra Quality” on the front of the coat and two on the rear. Two small size eagle buttons are on each cuff. The sleeves are lined with cotton, and the body of the coat is lined with beige colored linen (lining exhibits wear and age). The soldier wrote his initials “JW” on the back of the coat lining.

Provenance: James Frasca purchased this frock coat directly from the descendants of Private James C. Woods, 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in the mid 1970s.

Woods mustered into Company E on 6/19/1861 and transferred into the VRC on 4/6/1864. He mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee, on 8/26/1865.
