Lot Description
Captain Benjamin B. Hopkins, Company G, 5th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. A group of insignia, comprising:

4 1/2 x 1 5/8 in. captain of cavalry shoulder straps (moderate to heavy wear, bullion and velvet darkened, missing backing). Straps feature double bullion borders and rank devices, with yellow velvet centers.

[With:] Model 1851 cavalry crossed saber hat or cap device (bullion and velvet darkened and worn, remnants of original fastening tabs intact). Device consists of bullion embroidery on black velvet over metal underplate and dark brown cloth backing. Provenance: Grouping (along with Hopkins' post war ID badge) originally obtained by a collector in Baylis, IL, just 10 miles from Hopkins' residence of Griggsville, IL. In 2001, the insignia featured here were separated from the ID badge. Documentation included.
