Lot Description
Charles D. Mowry, Company C, 17th Maine Infantry / 1st Maine Heavy Artillery. Inscribed wallet.
12 3/4 x 4 3/4 in. (open) leather wallet (areas of discoloration, wear consistent with age and use). Interior right flap stamped "Made by Cobb & Johnson / Lancaster Mass" and lightly inscribed "Mr Charles D Mowry / [indecipherable] Alexandria Virginia." Interior central pockets inscribed, "April 16th 1865 / Sickels Hospital / Ward 'D' Alexandria Virginia / Mr Charles D Mowry / Co 'C' 17th Maine Infty Vols / Army of Potomac / 3d Brig. 1st Div / 3d Army Corps." Latter inscription features a drawing of a III Army Corps badge.
Listed in HDS with alternate surname spellings Mowey and Mowny, Private Mowry was drafted into Company C of the 17th Maine Infantry Regiment in September of 1863 and was transferred into the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery in December of 1864. At some point Mowry fell either ill or wounded, as he was in hospital at Alexandria, VA by April of 1865 as evidenced by the inscription on the wallet featured here. He was discharged the following month.
