Lot Description

GAR Rank Post 534 quilt, Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

76 x 65 in. quilt (exhibits minor wear that does not affect the inscriptions). The quilt includes 67 panels with browned ink inscriptions; 3 of these panels have specific post information including “Rank Post G.A.R. no. 534,” “Rank Relief Corps no. 242,” and “R.P. Kennedy Camp 92.” Five panels include the names of Ohio Generals (Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Garfield, and Benjamin Harrison) and the remaining 59 panels bear the names of 59 Tuscarawas County Soldiers including 10 who were killed or died of disease during the Civil War. The regiments represented on this quilt include the 6th Ohio Light artillery, 18th US Infantry, 72nd USCT, and the following Ohio Infantry Regiments: 16th, 19th, 23rd, 24th, 29th, 30th, 51st, 80th, 98th, 126th, 142nd, 161st, 189th, and 196th. Rank Post 534 was chartered 31July 1885.
