Lot Description
Recruits Wanted For The 3d Ohio Cavalry. Elmore, OH: 26 August 1862.
12 x 18 in. (visible area) letterpress broadside archivally mounted and framed to 13 1/2 x 19 1/2 in. (creased, with discoloration from previous storage/display and possible adhesive residue, and with wear including small holes throughout, unexamined out of the frame). Undersigned in type by Sergeant G. W. Boggs, Recruiting Officer. Early recruiting broadside for Company L of the 3rd Ohio Cavalry featuring a large patriotic eagle at center and entreating "FIFTEEN MEN" to enlist as volunteers before the implementation of a draft.
The 3rd Ohio Cavalry was organized from the state at large at Camp Worcester, Monroeville, in Huron County, with many of the men of this company hailing from Morrow County. In April of 1862 the regiment moved with Buell’s army through Tennessee and during the summer of 1862 participated in the siege of Corinth and operated in northern Alabama and Mississippi. The broadside extolls the benefits of joining a veteran regiment with experienced surgeons and well-drilled comrades. By August, 1862, 13 of the Company’s original 89 officers and men had either been discharged for disability or died of disease. The necessity of filling the thinned ranks led to this recruiting effort which resulted in 18 new Company L enlistments by September 1862. The regiment would go on to participate in battles ranging from Stones River and Chickamauga to Wilson’s Raid.
