Lot Description
Civil War chess board and accompanying pieces. Hills National Chess Board, 1862. 

14 3/4 x 15 in. patriotic chess board bound in fine Moroccan leather with gilt edging and lettering (some separation to fold at board center, wear along edges, corners, and some flat spots including puncturing to leather and leather loss, and surface soil/spotting in areas). Playing surface comprised of large albumen print featuring portraits of Civil War generals and other military personalities including a beardless Abraham Lincoln (approx. 6 1/2 in. rip in print). Either end with gilt embossed script reading, "Hill's Nat'l Chess Board" and "Patented Sept. 23, 1862." Accompanied by 32 highly detailed hand crafted bone chess pieces, 16 white and 16 red, composed in screw-apart segments (light wear, scattered chips and nicks). Pieces range in height from 1 1/4 to 3 1/2 in.

[With:] 8 x 10 in. modern photocopy of a Civil War image featuring officers of the 164th New York playing chess with pieces that appear very similar to those included in this lot.
