Lot Description
Union Playing Cards. New York: American Card Co., [ca 1864]. Complete set of Civil War playing cards with original box.
Complete set of Civil War Union Playing Cards with patriotic motifs housed in original box (cards and box with soiling, discoloration, and wear consistent with age and use, a few cards with some surface paper loss). Box interior features pencil inscription reading, "George Newcomb / [indecipherable]," and retains 2-cent revenue stamp marked, "Am C. Co. Mar 1864."
Red and white box advertises the "introduction of National Emblems" in place of the traditional suits and faces. Specifically, "The Suits are Eagles, Shields, Stars and Flags. Goddess of Liberty in place of Queen, Colonel for King, Major for Jack."
