Lot Description
Union Playing Cards. New York: American Card Co., [ca 1863]. Complete set of Civil War playing cards with original box.

Complete set of Civil War Union Playing Cards with patriotic motifs housed in original box (cards in good condition, with light soiling and bumping to edges and corners; box intact, with soiling and moderate to heavy wear including some separation to certain edges/corners). Top of box lightly inscribed, "Albert Harrie[?] Jewell. / [Indecipherable] Nov 1863." Box interior retains one-cent revenue stamp marked, in part, "A. C. C[o.] May [7] 1863.”

The vibrantly colored box advertises the "Introduction of National Emblems" in place of the traditional suits and faces. Specifically, "The Suits are Eagles, Shields, Stars and Flags. Colonel in place of King—Goddess of Liberty for Queen, and MAJOR for Jack..."
