The recently widowed Susan Chesnutt writes to civil rights leader Arthur B. Spingarn (1878-1971) thanking him for his sympathies: "thank you both very much for your note of sympathy. Every expression of admiration and affection for Mr. Chesnutt has helped in some degree to lessen our feeling of utter desolation at our great loss."
