Lot Description
[SLAVERY & ABOLITION]. Manuscript indenture describing the transfer and sale of land, property, and the enslaved men "Lewis" and "George." Alexandria County, District of Columbia, 20 June 1839.
4pp, 16 1/2 x 10 1/2 in. (separated at folds into multiple pieces, toning).
Indenture between William G. Howison and Alexander Hunter, Esquire, associated with property conveyed to Hunter by the deceased Joseph Birch. In 1824, Birch conveyed to Hunter land "and also a negro man slave [indecipherable] named Lewis - another named George...." The document indicates that Lewis was subsequently sold for four hundred dollars, and George was sold to Birch in his lifetime.
