Lot Description
[SHIPWRECK]. Manuscript letter describing a shipwreck involving the barque Caroline. Ca 1830s.
4 pages, 7 7/8 x 12 1/8 in., on bifolium, heavy creasing, old repairs to multiple separations, staining throughout.
Document with heading "Accident at Sea," reports a shipwreck involving the Irish transport barque Caroline and the American ship Blackhawk, whose crew "pillaged the emigrants' baggage most Villainously by their disembarkation and extorted money for being permitted to leave." It appears that Captain Harris of the Caroline sought to rescue passengers of the dismasted Blackhawk and reported his actions, many of which are relayed in this manuscript. Captain Harris is mentioned many times as a kind figure, especially compared with the Blackhawk's mate Hermann and his sub officers and crew.
The Caroline was built in 1834 for the McCorkell Line, and shortly thereafter wrecked and was lost off St. John in 1839.
