16mo velvet album (significant wear to spine, extremities, and interior pages, several images missing). Identified on inside page to "Sarah Sophia Pollock Dec. 7th 1883." Album contains 40 CDVs and tintypes, 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 in., or smaller, of men, women, and children, several identified on album pages as members of the Pollock family (toning, soiling, spotting to images; several with corner and edge wear). The album appears to include 4 portraits of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel McLean Pollock of the 6th Iowa Cavalry, both in uniform and civilian dress. The Civil War-date images include a full-length view of Pollock standing in a studio, dressed in uniform with sword in hand, his cap resting on the podium at left. Dubuque, IA: G.G. Johnson (vertical and horizontal creases to image and mount, damage near center of print and mount); and a vignetted view of Pollock in uniform, identified on mount as "Papa Pollock." Uncredited (horizontal crease through center of image and mount). Duplicate portraits of Pollock wearing a coat and bowtie are also enclosed, each with verso identification, "Papa Pollock" (toning, fading, soiling to images; edge and corner wear to mounts). A possible 5th tintype portrait including Pollock is enclosed, showing an older gent posed with his wife and two children. 

At the age of 33, Samuel Pollock enlisted on 10/21/1862 as a lieutenant colonel and was commissioned into Field & Staff, 6th Iowa Cavalry on 1/31/1863. He was later promoted to colonel  6/22/1864, then brevetted brigadier general on 3/13/1865. Pollock mustered out on 10/17/1865 at Sioux City, IA.

The album is highlighted by a CDV of two young girls, incl. one that may be mixed race, period identification to verso, "Misses Alice and Flora Gates, photographs."
